MapGEO

What we store, and what we do not.

The short version

You can play MapGEO without an account, and if you do, nothing about your play ever leaves your browser. An account is optional. Its only purpose is to save your scores and your streak so they survive a cleared cache or a new phone. We count page views in aggregate, with no cookies and nothing that can follow you to another site. We do not advertise, and we do not sell your information to anyone.

Who this is

MapGEO is made and operated by Orchard Sky Digital Inc., a company registered in Nova Scotia, Canada. We are the controller of the personal information described here. You can reach a person at orchardskydigital@gmail.com.

Playing without an account

Your scores, your run history and your daily streak are written to localStorage in your own browser. They are not sent anywhere, we never see them, and we could not produce them if we were asked to. Clearing your site data deletes them, and that is the whole of the deletion process.

The game itself sends us nothing about how you played: not your answers, not your score, not which countries you missed. Two things do leave the page, and neither is about your play. The map modes download the map geometry, a static file from the same site that served you the page. And the page view itself is counted, which is described below.

If you make an account

An account exists to save what the browser would otherwise lose. It stores:

  • Your email address, so we can sign you in and so you can get back in on another device.
  • An identifier from Google or Apple, if you choose to sign in that way instead. We receive an account identifier and an email address; we do not receive your password or your contacts.
  • A password hash, if you choose to set a password. We never store or see the password itself.
  • Your results: for each finished round, which mode it was, your score, how many questions it had and when you played.
  • Your daily plays: the date, the answers you gave and the score, so the daily challenge stays one go a day across your devices.

That is the complete list. There is no profile, no display name you have to pick, no friends list and no location.

When you report a bug

The report form in the footer sends what you typed, plus which page you were on, your browser and screen size, and the current puzzle date. The email field is optional and is only used to reply to you. Reports become issues in our private code repository, which is hosted by GitHub.

Who else it passes through

We use a small number of companies to run the app. Each of them handles data on our instructions and for no purpose of their own.

  • Supabase: the database and sign-in system that stores your account and your results.
  • Vercel: hosting, and the page-view counting described under Measurement. Vercel keeps short-lived request logs, which include IP addresses, as every web server does.
  • Resend: the service that delivers your sign-in email. It handles your address in order to send that message, and only when you ask to sign in.
  • Google and Apple, only if you choose to sign in with one of them, and only then.
  • GitHub, only for bug reports you choose to send.

Cookies

MapGEO sets cookies for one thing: keeping you signed in. They are set only after you sign in, and signing out removes them. There are no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies and no third-party trackers, which is why this site has no cookie banner asking you to accept any.

Measurement

We count page views, so we can tell whether anybody is finding the site and which parts of it get used. This is Vercel Web Analytics, and it is the least it can be and still be useful.

  • No cookies. Nothing is stored on your device and nothing is read from it, which is why there is still no cookie banner on this site.
  • Nothing about your play. It records which page was loaded, where you came from, and the country, browser and device type. It does not see your answers, your score or your streak.
  • You are counted, not followed. Repeat visits within a day are recognised by a hash of your IP address and browser, made on the server and never stored as either. That hash is thrown away and made afresh each day, so nobody can tell that today’s visitor was here yesterday.
  • It does not work across other sites. The script is served from mapgeo.app itself rather than from a third-party domain, and the hash is specific to this site, so there is nothing here that could recognise you anywhere else.

It runs on the live site only. It is not loaded on a preview build or when the app is run on somebody’s own machine.

What changed

Until 6 September 2026 this page said we ran no analytics of any kind. That is no longer true, and the section above describes what replaced it. We are naming the change rather than quietly deleting the sentence, because a promise withdrawn without saying so is worse than one never made.

What has not changed: no advertising, no selling your information, no third-party trackers, no cookie banner, and nothing at all about how you play leaving your browser.

What you can do about it

From your account page you can download everything we hold about you as a file, and delete your account outright. Deleting removes your account and every result attached to it from our database. It does not touch the copy in your own browser, which stays yours.

Under Canadian federal privacy law (PIPEDA) you can also ask us for a copy of your information, ask us to correct it, or complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. Email us first and we will sort it out faster.

How long we keep it

For as long as your account exists. Delete the account and it goes. If you stop using MapGEO entirely, email us and we will delete it for you.

Children

Anyone can play MapGEO. It asks for nothing and there is no age gate, because there is nothing to gate.

Accounts are different, because an account means an email address. You must be at least 13 to create one, and at least 16 where local law sets the bar there. If you believe a child has made an account, email us and we will delete it.

Changes

If this page changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it. Continuing to use an account after that means you are happy with the new version; if you are not, delete the account and keep playing without one.
